NIE number and Residency
First of all, even if you do not need a permit (EU Citizens) to stay in Spain, you may consider applying for an NIE number and/or a residency document. Consequently, these will make you a legitimate Spanish resident and are very useful for different procedures.
Furthermore, it is important to distinguish between NIE Number (Número de Identidad de Extranjero = Foreigner Identification Number) and Tarjeta de Residencia (Residency Card) which contains the NIE.
Although EU citizens do not necessarily need a residence permit to be in Spain, to handle business matters, to buy or rent a house, to open a bank account, or in cases where you need to fill in official forms, an NIE number is required.
What is the Spanish Residency Card?
If you wish to forego the tax residence of your country and transfer it to the Canary Islands you must obtain the Spanish Residency Card.
This document includes already the NIE number. As well as personal data and is the proof that you have your current domicile in Gran Canaria. As a result, you can, therefore, take advantage of discounted rates in various facilities.
Transferring the residence from abroad involves the loss of the status of a resident in your own country. This can sometimes be fiscally problematic.
Can I get the Residency Card in Gran Canaria?
However, getting permanent residency in Gran Canaria is not as simple as people think.
To be considered a tax resident in Gran Canaria and therefore to obtain a permanent residence, a foreign citizen must be “accepted” by the Government and then prove to meet the requirements of economic, health and home subsistence.
